Embracing Multi-skilling in Human Resource Management

Introduction

HR practitioners must now embrace the idea of multiskilling in order to successfully traverse the intricacies of the contemporary workplace and promote corporate success. The days of HR specialists handling employee benefits administration, onboarding, and recruitment exclusively are long gone. They are now expected to be multi-talented and have a wide variety of skills to manage several facets of human resource management.

Types of multi-skilling

According to Oksana Szłapowska (2023) There are two main types of multi skilling can be distinguished

·    vertical multi skilling - an employee learns the tasks and responsibilities of coworkers who work at lower-level or a higher-level position

·    horizontal (lateral) multi skilling - an employee learns tasks and responsibilities of coworkers from another discipline.

As per the businessballs.com (2024) Benefits of Multi-Skilling

    • Personal goals achieved efficiently
    • Increased job security

    • Better growth prospects and employee development/building on existing skills

How multi-skilling is beneficial to an organization:

  1. Prefer a cross-functional line manager that focuses on the whole team

Such a design should lead to:

    • Instead of having single-skill line managers focusing on individual performances, prefer a cross-functional line manager who focuses on the whole team.
    • Cross-functional line managers—without any authority to give work to the teams—should focus on improving the organizational design and team effectiveness.
    • Expert leads who facilitate the development of employees.

2.     Create a System of Human Operations to Support Multi-skilled Specialists

    • Values employees by a combination of personal and team accomplishments.
    • Values people to become multi-skilled specialists.
    • Values a balance between deep specialists and generalists in the teams.

An organization can do that by creating a multi-skilled growth system that allows people to create their own job paths. Figure 3 shows a general value system.
